Its that time again, time to plant bulbs, the years seem fly by as I get older, anyway, planting Daffodils, tulips, crocus, grape hyacinths and fritillarias  bulbs from now until December or the first frost, will fill your garden with colour next spring.

Bulbs for the Herbaceous border

Bulbs like, daffodils, winter aconites, tulips and fritillarias  planted in your herbaceous border will fill gaps and provide colour and interest before the perennials and shrubs begin to grow in early spring.
Also groups of early-flowering tulips will add interest and colour to the borders you intend planting with annuals in the summer.

Bulbs for planting around trees.
Scillas, anemones, erythroniums and crocuses bulbs will do well in the light moist soil found under trees.

Bulbs for lawns.
Dwarf daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops and winter aconites look great in lawns, let them die back before the first mow. If you are a chemical green lawn person who cant wait to get your lawn mower and chemicals out as soon as you hear the cuckoo, try planting the bulbs in containers or groups you can mow and spread chemicals around.

How to plant bulbs

Most hardy bulbs originate from the Mediterranean, so will grow best in well drained soil in a sunny spot. If you want to try bulbs that will thrive in the shady areas of your garden click on the link below and do a search for bulbs for shady areas.

Most bulbs are easy to plant and grow in well-drained soil with some sunshine, plant the bulbs two to three times their own depth with the top facing upwards. Make sure there are no air spaces around the bulbs by gently firming in. If  you are not sure about the correct planting depth and spacing of the bulbs you have selected, read the label.

Planting bulbs in a lawn is easy too, A natural look is obtained by dropping the bulbs on the grass and planting them where they land. A quick way to plant a lot of small bulbs is to lift an area of turf, plant the bulbs and replace the turf.

Aftercare of bulbs.
Aftercare is almost minimal, probably the most important thing is to allow the bulbs to die back before mowing. Some of the less hardy bulbs might need lifting in the winter so check the label. Bulbs planted in containers may need extra care by watering in dry weather and protecting from frost in the winter.

Readers Q

I have a few pots filled with amaryllis plants and other bulbs. I usally start watering the plants in early spring.  My question is, all the pots have side bulbs that I want to separate and repot, When should I separate the side bulbs and repot?    Should I do it during the winter while the bulbs are dormant or earlier in the Autumn.

Readers A     While they are dormant is the best time and start  watering the new bulbs at the same time you start watering the mother bulbs.  The new plants should produce foliage in the first year and flowering in the third year.
